| About the Psychiatric Outpatients Clinic |
| Psychiatry is a medical speciality dealing with the assessment and management of mental disorders. |
Treatment is offered for patients with the following disorders:
- Psychotic Disorders such as Schizophrenia
- Mood Disorders like Depression
- Anxiety Disorders
- Other major mental illnesses which cause distress to the patient or to others, and affect the patient’s ability to function normally
|
| Consultation is by Appointment only |
|
The first appointment session would take about 45 minutes to 1 hour. This would help the Psychiatrist to do a thorough assessment to establish whether the patient is suffering from a mental illness that needs treatment. |
| If the patient has no mental illness, reassurance would be provided. No further appointments are needed. |
| If the patient has a mental illness, appropriate treatment would be commenced. Treatment is usually in the form of oral tablets. Some patients may benefit from psychological advice. |
| For patients prescribed treatment, follow-up appointments would be arranged to review response to treatment. These follow-up appointments usually take about 15 to 20 minutes. |
| How long a patient needs to take medication, and how long a patient needs to continue attending the Outpatients Clinic depend on the nature and severity of the mental illness being treated. |

| Note:The Psychiatric Outpatients Clinic is not suitable for psychiatric emergencies such as patients attending hospital after a suicidal attempt, or patients who are aggressive and pose a risk of harm to others |
